A program designed for youth ages 14 to 21 who are deficient in basic literacy skills, are low income,  have dropped out of school, homeless, a runaway or a foster child, someone who is pregnant or parenting, an offender, a disabled youth or is a member of a family receiving public assistance.
Program Elements are:

1. Tutoring- Study Skills Training and Instruction leading to completion of Secondary School and drop out prevention.  GED preparation is also available under this element.

2. Alternative Secondary School Services- Individuals who are expelled from school are offered alternative school placement within the Parish.

3. Summer Employment Opportunities- Four week employment opportunities linked to academic and occupational learning.

4. Paid and Unpaid Work Experiences- Internships and job shadowing. Structured employment experiences that take place in an actual work place that is designed to enable the youth to gain exposure to the work environment.

5. Occupational Skills Training ? Provides training in Occupational Skills that may prohibit a young person from acquiring gainful employment.

6. Leadership Development- Provides exposure to post secondary educational opportunities, community and service and projects, peer centered activities (mentoring and tutoring), organizational team work training, decision making, citizenship training, life skills training and parenting, and budgeting.

7. Adult Mentoring- Assist youth in finding an adult mentor.

8. Follow up Services- Regular contact with youth participant, employer, and assistance in securing jobs, career development and further education, work related peer groups.

9.  Supportive Services- Links to community services, assistance with transportation, childcare and dependent and housing cost.

10. Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling- General, drug and alcohol abuse counseling.

The Comprehensive Youth Services Program  is a collaborative effort between the Calcaieu Parish Police Jury, Workforce Investment Board and United Christian Fellowship Ministries and is funded by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA)
